Congratulating Maggie Esquivel-Torres

Spokane, Wash. law firm Lukins & Annis and Gonzaga University School of Law are proud to announce the winner of the inaugural Lukins & Annis Law, Ethics and Commerce Scholarship, Margarita (Maggie) Esquivel-Torres.

Specifically created to advance diversity, inclusion, and minority representation in the Pacific Northwest legal community, the scholarship will provide Esquivel-Torres with financial assistance and a summer associate position at the firm in 2021.

The scholarship program honors founders Gene Annis and Scott Lukins’s legacy of a commitment to diversity in education, housing, employment, and the legal profession. Founded in 1972, Lukins & Annis serves the legal needs of clients in Spokane, Seattle, Moses Lake, and Coeur d’Alene, ID.

Esquivel-Torres’s impressive personal and academic history, as well as her dedication to the pursuit of equity and equality, made her an ideal candidate for the scholarship, noted the selection committee.

In addition to working in the Catholic Charities Immigration Clinic at Gonzaga Law, Esquivel-Torres volunteers as a student-liaison for the Washington State Minority and Justice Commission, and other entities focused on advancing diversity efforts within the Spokane community.

Mike Maurer, the firm president, is proud to announce this year’s selection. “We are thrilled to have Maggie be the first recipient of the Lukins & Annis scholarship,” he said. “As a first-generation law student, she has firsthand knowledge of the hardships that many like her face and will use her law degree to advocate for advanced education, diversity, and tolerance in our legal community.”

This scholarship program is organized through the Gonzaga Law’s Center for Law, Ethics and Commerce (CLEC). Established in 2006, CLEC offers students interdisciplinary programming in business, technology, and innovation – all with an eye toward the public good.
