Our Hiring Committee, comprised of our firm president and a number of attorneys, coordinates our attorney hiring process. We participate in on-campus interviewing programs (as applicable). This Committee also coordinates applicant interviews within the firm and extends offers, on behalf of the Board of Directors, to successful candidates.
Our firm practices in a broad spectrum of business and litigation areas. In recruiting all levels of attorneys, our goal is to recruit "the best of the best." The reputation we hold in the communities we serve and among our peers is one of excellence in product and in service. Our past hiring practices and dedicated attorneys have enabled us to become the premier firm we are. Challenging and satisfying work for top quality attorneys is unlimited at L&A.
While we look forward to hiring a number of previous summer associates each year, we do also hire attorneys by other means, including attorneys who have worked in government service or those who have clerked for federal judges.
We are always interested in recruiting qualified attorneys with strong practices and an interest in a challenging and rewarding professional atmosphere.
Starting salaries for entry-level associates are competitive within our regional market; we endeavor to be at the top of the entry range. For lateral hires, we also look at experience, skill, and achievement in developing a mutually agreeable salary.
New associates at L&A are assigned to work principally in either the Business or the Litigation departments. The assignment process considers both the firm's needs for attorneys in specific practice areas and the new attorney's preferences. Our senior attorneys are committed to providing associates with challenges appropriate to their aptitude, experience, and desire. We expect a high-quality work product. In addition to on-going, informal feedback by the working attorneys, formal evaluations are conducted annually to evaluate each associate's development.

We are firmly committed to our summer associate program, which we have designed to provide the law students we hire with "real life" experience. We typically hire second-year students and conclude our on-campus interviewing by the middle of October each year, extending offers by November. Their work during a summer enables us to evaluate them within our firm for our future associate hiring needs, which is the core of our attorney hiring program. This experience also gives the summer associate the opportunity to observe our firm first-hand.
As a summer associate, you can look forward to a variety of work, usually choosing the general area in which you wish to consider directing your career. You will work directly with attorneys in assisting with current cases. We encourage our summer associates and attorneys to communicate on the many varied projects in which you are involved, and we expect open, honest feedback from the supervising attorneys for your benefit.
Lest you think life at L&A is all work and no play, be assured that this cannot be so in our beautiful and natural resource-rich locale. Surrounding Spokane are many beautiful lakes and rich, forested areas abounding with opportunities for camping, hiking, backpacking, biking, boating, fishing, and just plain soaking in the warmth, sunshine, and beauty. Our firm also organizes a number of events for our summer associates to become better acquainted with Spokane and with our firm: golfing at one of our many beautiful courses; enjoying an evening in a Skybox cheering on our Texas Rangers Class A affiliate, the Spokane Indians; evenings spent barbecuing and relaxing at an attorney's home or lake place; or a drink after work with an L&A group. The summer passes all too quickly when, suddenly, you'll be packing your bags for that "final year"!
If you are interested in joining us as a summer associate for 2009, please submit your resume by the end of September 2008 to be considered for next year’s program. Send your information to:
